Summit K-12 closing?

Summit K-12, an alternative elementary school near Nathan Hale High School, may be shutting its doors to 500 some students. Seattle Public Schools, facing a 37.1 million dollar budget short fall, is looking for all sorts of ways to cut corners. Summit is being targeted because its cost per student is above average. It would be replaced with a traditional elementary school. Rainier Beach High School faces a possible merger with nearby Cleveland High School. These proposed changes would put Seattle Schools 3.6 million dollars closer to meeting their budget.

Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson will make her final decision January 6th following three mid December hearings. The dates and times of the hearings are listed at the end of this PI article. Check out these related articles in the PI and Seattlest.
