We Have New Neighbors - A Photo Tour Through Tent City

If you haven't already heard, Tent City moved in into the neighborhood. Saturday October 24th Tent City moved to St. George's Episcopal Church parking lot at 22nd and 125th. This the 3rd time they've been at this location and they'll be here through January 2010.

When I stopped by Tent City, Shady (pictured in slide show) generously gave me a tour. Shady has lived in Tent City for about a year. He is a Veteran currently waiting on Veteran housing. He explained that most people living there had made a poor choice or and been dealt a bad hand. He said, "We're homeless, we're not bad people".

Currently Tent City houses about 100 people, mostly men, ages 18-70. Weekly mandatory meetings are an essential part or their organizational process. The five elected ECs, Executive Committee, run the meetings and take responsibility for organizing the day to day needs of the community. Most tents house individuals but the Mash is the male group tent that houses up to 24 men at a time. He couldn't show me the inside of The Mash because women are not allowed inside of men's tents. Other community tents include the TV/library tent and the kitchen. The kitchen houses community food, a microwave, and coffee pot.

Right now they really need blankets. Other things on their wish list include tents, tarps, batteries, sleeping bags, coffee, paper products, canned protein, clothes, pain relievers, and antibacterial cleaning supplies. Welcome them to the neighborhood by donating. Interested in helping them out with a meal? Contact Liz Fenn of Greater Seattle Cares at 425-698-5581 or lfenn60@comcast.net.

Donations are payable to SHARE-Tent City 3 PO BOX 2548 Seattle, WA 98111-2548

thanks for the tour
I have never been to any of the tent cities - thank you for the view inside, and the interview. It definitely puts a face onto the issue for me - even more than stories I have read in the Seattle Times, too.

tent city
I felt welcome when I visited Tent City when it was at Lake City Christian across the street and I was impressed with the organization. Hosting Tent City makes me prouder of our neighborhood. I believe I read that crime actually decreased in the vicinity of Tent City when it was at St Marks on Capitol Hill.

tent city and last years flooding!~`
I was homeless out here in this community for a long time and I had even spent time at The So called "all famous Tent City" and Ill be the FIRST to tell you that its NOT what its all cracked up to be...from FIRST hand experience there are more drugs in tent city than there is on the corner of 145th and lake city way....if ya park across the street on the first of the month you can see em all "tent hop" looking for drugs ..and I personally dont feel that this is something that we need in lake city...we are havin a hard enough time with this drug issues...if ya ask me this just pours "salt" on an ongoin wound!

I think that last years flooding issues...when the house down in the lil gulley there at the creek on the same side of 125th as tent city right now....theier home was totally flooded last year and from my observation thety desperatly needed help bailing water out of the lower half of thier home..we drove into tent city and requested that they help these people...in THIER time of need....and we were told that quote unquote " we can help them with some dinners ...thats about it....well feed them..." I WAS SHOCKED~~~! well put them up for a night!.... Hows that for "Gratitude" ??

anyways they are not all bad ppl....

mayb havin said this...they can return a "helping hand" this year that they get so much of ALL YEAR ROUND

the truth
My girlfriend and I both lived in both tc3 and tc4 for over 5 years. We finale moved to Spokane to get permanent housing. We've had our own apartment for 3 years. I spent more time on the Executive Committee then most. The main reason we left tent city and came to Spokane was because what was going on in camp. Three years ago while at St. Georges in Lake City those of us on EC started seeing thing going out of control. We decided to clean the camp. We barred those using drugs and drinking in camp, we also got rid of the people stealing donations so they could sell them. Thing were going well for about a week. Scott Morrow who was in charge came in and barred 3 of the EC saying they were trying to take over the camp and said they had to much power over others. I stayed on there for 5 more months. We were told not to call the police for any reason unless Scott or Leo Rhodes approved. They said we needed to keep the population in camp up no matter what. They also stated if we called the police for any type of help it would make their record look bad, so we couldn't call even at the risk of our safety. We watched cash donations meant for camp use go to Scott for gas and insurance for his car and to be used to buy him food. He passed up good, Guaranteed camp sites because it wouldn't get Tent City enough press time. We were not allowed to update the sex offender list and had to use outdated lists. We had 3 people elected to EC in 6 months that were on that list. To keep crime from being linked to the camp people were allowed to sign in to camp without Id. They would also edit the list when someone got in trouble. At Cherry Hill church we were told to take in two couples with kids they stayed for 3 weeks. We also had an overdose by a man named Birch yet he was allowed back in camp. Three months later at Haller Lake the same man while on drugs tried to kick in the door to the church's daycare next door saying they took his kids. None of it was reported to the police because the church did not want to cause problems for Tent City. There's a lot of things that happen there that's unreported.
