Rick's Last Dance?

You've got one week to stop into Lake City's most well known establishment. May 5 Rick's (along with four other strip clubs) will close it's doors to the Seattle public. Frank Sr. and Jr., along with three partners, face federal charges for racketeering, facilitation of prostitution, money laundering and mail fraud. Yesterday three of the five pleaded guilty to these charges.

This is not the first (or second) time that Frank Jr and Sr. have been in the hot seat. You'd think that at 90 something Frank Sr. would slow down a bit. But business has been good for these men who raked in an estimated 24 million in the past 4 years.

Seattlites always react strongly to charges against Rick's - urging the government and SPD to spend their time and money on more important matters (like preventing El Norte from opening). Although this seems the be the general sentiment, I know Lake City residents who live near Rick's are relieved. I've heard their horror stories of prostitution taking place in their backyards. For them, this is a victory.

Some worry Rick's closure may be short lived. The building is built to be a strip club. Who's to say its next owner won't want to use it for the same purpose. Rick's is the only parking lot in Lake City that is packed at all hours of the day and night. When Rick's door close, we'll have to find a new reason for Seattlites to visit Lake City.

Bye Ricks!
This is great news but I also worry if it just means another strip club will open there in a couple of months. Theme restaurant, maybe? Just kidding, but seriously we need to find a way to attract new businesses to Lake City.

Reason to Visit LC
Hello! There are already plenty of reasons to visit Lake City! Thai One On's delicious curry, Toyoda Sushi's delicious sushi, the amazing farmer's market (that starts on June 4...welcome tamales!), and don't forget Fletcher's Second Hand for antiques and everything you didn't know you needed. I know we still need a coffee shop worth visiting but I think we're doing alright!

I'd rather have another car dealership than strip club
For anyone that lives in or around LC, this has got to be welcome news. How many other residential neighborhoods in Seattle have a strip club? To me, places like Rick's give LC a ratty feel that I'm betting hinders some businesses from wanting to set up shop here, and people from wanting to live here. I don't have kids, but driving down LCW at 3 p.m. on a school day and seeing all the kids waiting for the bus right across from Rick's is just downright depressing. I really, really hope the property gets bought by something much more useful to ALL LC residents and visitors.
